Safeguarding Training Policy

Reference: ET-STP-001Last reviewed: April 2026

Ember Learning Ltd (trading as Ember Tutors)

1. Purpose

This Policy sets out the safeguarding and related training framework for Ember Tutors. It identifies the training required for each role, the frequency of that training, and how completion is managed and evidenced. It should be read alongside the Child Protection and Safeguarding Policy (ET-CPSP-001).

2. Principles

Training is not a one-off event but an ongoing commitment. No individual will deliver sessions or access student personal data before their mandatory pre-commencement training is complete. The training programme combines external accredited courses, directed reading of statutory guidance, and internally delivered sessions led by the DSL or Deputy DSL.

3. Training Requirements by Role

3.1 Designated Safeguarding Lead and Deputy DSL

  • DSL-level safeguarding training (external, accredited) — refreshed every two years
  • Safer recruitment training (external) — refreshed every three years
  • Keeping Children Safe in Education — full document read annually each September
  • Prevent / WRAP awareness (Home Office elearning) — refreshed every three years
  • Ongoing CPD through statutory guidance updates and engagement with the local safeguarding partnership

3.2 Tutors — Pre-Commencement

All training below must be completed before a tutor delivers any session or accesses any student personal data:

  • NSPCC child protection for tutors elearning (or equivalent) — refreshed annually
  • Prevent / WRAP awareness (Home Office elearning) — refreshed every three years

Certificate evidence must be submitted and recorded on the platform before pre-start sign-off is issued.

3.3 Tutors — Induction (Internal, DSL-Led)

  • Online safety awareness — walkthrough of the Online Safety Policy and platform safeguarding features
  • Mental health awareness — recognising signs of distress, appropriate responses, and escalation procedures
  • Safeguarding and policy induction — review of the Child Protection and Safeguarding Policy and reporting procedures

3.4 Tutors — Ongoing (Annual)

  • Keeping Children Safe in Education (Part One) — directed reading each September with written confirmation
  • Child protection refresh — annual renewal of NSPCC elearning (or equivalent)
  • Monthly group meetings — DSL-facilitated sessions covering pastoral welfare, student concerns, and safeguarding updates

4. Responsibility and Accountability

The DSL is responsible for ensuring all training requirements are met, that completion is recorded, and that renewal dates are monitored. No tutor may deliver sessions while their mandatory training is out of date. Where a renewal deadline is missed, sessions will be paused until compliance is restored.

5. Review

This Policy is reviewed annually each September, following publication of the updated Keeping Children Safe in Education, and updated to reflect any changes to statutory guidance or the Company's delivery model. The DSL is responsible for initiating the review.
